It'll be a sad Christmas for many Chicago families. Dominick's will be closing all of its Chicago area stores on December 28, 2013, and the company now estimates the closures will lead to 5,633 layoffs.
Of the 72 Dominick's stores in the city, only four have been purchased so far. Jewel-Osco, the buyer of those four stores, will retain about 450 workers.
Unless the fate of the other 68 stores, changes, 5,000 workers will be without work come January.
