A thunderstorm is a storm that is producing lightning and thunder and maybe associated with heavy rain, hail and gusty winds, or it might only just produce lightning and none of the following. A thundershower is a thunderstorm that contains precipitation. A severe thunderstorm is a thunderstorm that contains heavy rain, hail .75 inches or larger in diameter and winds 58 mph or faster and sometimes could be associated with a tornado.
