President Trump Orders The Creation Of US Space Command

President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to establish a new U.S. Space Command. Vice President Mike Pence made the announcement on Tuesday (December 18) at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida where the command will be based.

“Under his leadership, the United States is taking steps to ensure that American national security is as dominant in space as it is here on Earth,” Pence said. “It is my privilege to announce that today, President Trump will direct the Department of Defense to establish a combatant command that will oversee all our military activities in space.”

Pence explained that other countries are actively working to create space-based weapons, and the United States needs to be ready to combat those threats.

“For years, foreign nations have been developing electronic weapons to jam, blind, and disable satellites. China and Russia are working to station new weapons directly in space and frankly, these new challenges demand new and innovative responses, and that’s precisely what we’ve been providing.”

Pence said the command will be made up of members from each branch of the military and they will work to ensure that the United States can defend itself in the future.

“The U.S. Space Command will integrate space capabilities across all branches of the military. It will develop the space doctrine tactics, techniques, and procedures that will enable our warfighters to defend our nation in this new era.”

The creation of U.S. Space Command is one of the first steps in the president's plan to create a Space Force that would become the sixth branch of the U.S. military.
