According to USA Today, Sha'Carri Richardson missed out on qualifying for the 200m competition after getting arrested for a domestic violence incident in the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Christian Coleman, the victim in the domestic violence incident, defended Richardson, saying, "I don't think she should have been arrested." Richardson still qualified for her 100m as she is the defending champion. Despite running his season-best in both races, Coleman failed to qualify for the championship, getting fifth and sixth place in the 100 and 200m, respectively.
