When police pulled a Chicago suburban man over Sunday afternoon to question why he was traveling 135 mph down the interstate the driver told them he was trying to get his intoxicated friends home safely.

When 34-year-old Ralph Cornell of River Grove saw the trooper's car he slowed down but the officer had already clocked his speed at more than twice the legal limit - traveling at 135 mph in a 65 mph zone.

Cornell told the trooper he was the designated driver and wanted to get his intoxicated passenger home safely, police said. He was issued a citation for speeding 40 mph over the speed limit, a Class A misdemeanor.
